The Czech Republic has a special holiday to mark the birthday of St. Nicholas, known by many as Santa Claus.
On December the 6th, some people dressed up as the jolly old saint others as demons and angels. They visited families in every Czech town had sweets for well-behaved kids and coal for naughty ones.
And this year, villagers in the town of Jince took the celebration a step further. They created scenes of heaven and hell in an abandoned farmhouse.
Before the kids went in the parents told the angels and demons whether their kids were good or not the past year. Its all part of the experience. And with a goal in mind.
[villager]:
Here we teach kids to be more mindful of their parents and grandparents at home, as it was in bygone times when children respected their grandparents and older people.
After passing through hell, children are met by kind angels.
[Vaclav Cezek, St. Nicholas]:
Here in heaven we have a book of sins and we read from it what these kids were up to.
Thanks to a hint from the kids parents.
[Vaclav Cezek, St. Nicholas]:
And the kids are really surprised when St. Peter on high knows what was going on.
And so with the help of St. Nick and the devil as well, children are taught an age-old saying that good is met with fortune and evil with dirty coal.
