This shows how I prepare straw bales for the winter when I know I will be planting organic vegetables right into the straw bales the following spring. I add human urine: I pee in a gallon jug inside my home, then I bring it out a couple times a week to pour it on the straw bales. The urine adds nitrogen and wetness to the straw, which is otherwise mostly carbon and dry.

  • An old lady one told me about a potato plant that grew in a straw bale. She even got some poattoes without hurting the plant just by grabbing the taters in the straw. They way you do it is pretty cool I have to say! I use my pee too to keep animals away and to add nitrogen to my compost.(only a gardener can understand ;)

  • Yeah, I guess I'm like the "old lady" you speak of! I have another video showing me harvesting spuds from a straw bale, and I literally pulled them out bare-handed, without needing a shovel, etc. It was super easy.

    Thanks for commenting! Happy gardening!
