I had to stop eating for a minute and try to capture some of this SLURPLGURGLINGING... a sad, habit taken from China... how the Japanese can be so advanced in so many ways and yet still cling on to this custom of slurping their soup is beyond me. Oh well, at least they don't spit in the street like in some other cultures. I didn't catch any good slurps in this short clip... maybe that's a good thing. The people at the table next to us were making an ungodly racket with all their slurping. When in Rome, do as the Romans.... sorry... I can kneel in the seiza for hours, bathe naked at the onsen, bow repeatedly, eat with chopsticks, drive on the left side of the road, shower and bathe before bed, and all that other great stuff, but I won't slurp while eating. It's just gross to me, and incredibly disrespectful to the people who are trying to eat in peace, and I feel that way despite having lived in Europe, North America and Asia.

  • Americans may do it, but culturally it is still considered rude to burp, put feet on table, play with food, etc.

I guess slurping in Japan has a lot to do with the inadequacy of chopsticks versus a spoon when it comes to liquid. Regardless, still a crude and sloppy way to eat. Same as eating with your fingers was in Europe before the invention of the fork.

  • In middle school in Japan in the 80s they brought the students to a tatami room within the school and taught the students etiquette. Among other things (like learning to bow) they also taught that it is VERY RUDE to slurp your soup! However it's true that some girls have been kicked out of famous noodle restaurants for _not_ slurping.

  • Japanese do that only when its noodle, not soup.

You guys might think its rude but in japan, its normal.

of course, they don't do that with spaghetti.

Plus, I bet that americans are as rude as Japan in lots of ways.

(Burping, Puts their feet on the table, PLAYS WITH FOOD, do something sick and think its funny, etc.)

  • i know huh?

  • gross

  • What do you laugh at? Did you associate fellatio? The inside of your head is vulgar!

    lol

  • What a sick mind, FTW2K!

I couldn't stop laughing when I read that.

  • I agree with you. It's really annoying!

  • keep up that slurping and the soup is bound to come to orgasm.

  • There is so much to love about Japan: the hard-working, honest, friend, warm, funny and highly-moral population; the food (except white jellyfish and natto); the onsens, the hospitality, and the architecture, cleanliness and efficiency of its monuments, cities and towns. Alas, like the jellyfish and the natto, I also do not like the slurping. I don't like slurping anywhere in the world (my father was a northern european slurper, GRHS)
