Oh I agree. I mean, I loved The X-Files in the beginning but it got SOO bad rather quickly. Fringe just seems to have that little bit extra where you HAVE to watch it every week. And John Noble is just so damn fantastic as Walter.
Love him or hate him, JJ Abrams understands how to create awesome characters. Too bad Undercovers sucks. I have faith that the shows he's planning with Jonah Nolan, Liz Sarnoff, Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson will be awesome.
Its different... seems to have a much better structure. X-Files' had great polot arch's but only really for the episodes in question. Some of the 2-3 parter's are brilliant. Later on it got ridiculous of course... Fringe, Lost, Dexter and BSG (or even House) I think have/had a much better way of approaching episodic TV dramas. Whatever you think of X-Files I think it definitely paved the way for shows like Fringe.
Actually I said this comment before I had actually see in the show. Before I thought it looked just like a rip off of x-files but it has its own voice. i think of it like a cross between Lost and X-Files. The "stand alones" dont seem redundant and the very few that barely progress the plot also seem to fit rather well unlike X-Files stand alones that 90% make no difference to the story at all. If they did it x-files style it would have taken 4 seasons to get to where they are now LOL
love this show. i am hooked! the 3 main characters are very well casted.

after watching half of season 1, I will say that it is very similar to the early seasons of X Files
