Easy goals to be safe in any emergency. I am a Community Disaster Educator for The American Red Cross and a member of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and I have made a collection movie of weekly Emergency Preparedness Goals to urge you to prepare for any and all kinds of disasters. You will need a disaster kit for your home, work and one for your car! A gallon of water per person per day. Some officials recommend disaster supplies enough to last for 2 weeks. Do NOT consider your home food and water sufficient. What will you do without electricity, gas or heat, telephone, or destroyed infrastructures? The answers are here, both creating a safe environment and building your disaster kits! This is very basic, but have you done one of the suggested goals. One of the most important is to never allow your vehicle's gas tank to get below a half a tank. When you see automobiles caught evacuating, many of them have run out of gas and others cannot get by or around them. Also keep cash in small denominations. ATMs will not work, nor will gas pumps without electricity or there will be very long lines. Here is a great link for a PDF of a Family Disaster Plan & Personal Safety Guide i PDF that you can print off and check off the list of important preparation BEFORE an event. It is for San Diego County but universal.
