Singapore Zoo or the Singapore zoological Gardens as it was previously called is a great tourist attraction in the city. Locally, this zoo is commonly called as the Mandai Zoo. Spread across a 28-hectares land area on the Upper Selator Reservoir margins within the heavily forested area of central catchment in Singapore.
Opened on the 23rd of June in the year 1973, this zoo was built at a high cost of around S$ 9 million that were granted by the Singapore's Government. This zoo is managed and operated by the Wildlife Reserves of Singapore that also manages the adjacent Night Safari and also the Jurong Bird Park.
Around 315 different species of animals in the zoo lures millions of visitors every year. Out of these, around sixteen percent are believed to be the threatened species. From its start, the zoo has been following the modern way of showcasing animals in their natural and realistic habitats. The barriers are hidden behind the moats and shrubs, housed here. One of the most remarkable features about this zoo is that it houses the largest confined colony of orangutans in the whole world!
