It is very well said that the real accident differs a lot from this cartoon, but after I've heard that Casey have wrecked one of the railroad's locomotives earlier, it makes me think like; Maybe this kind of just represents his daily life, doing his best to get on time despite all difficulties and even if the engine have to pay the prize, and the real wreck with the Cannonball took place later?

... Just some kinda silly idea I got.
