I just got a DVD of over 350 half hour radio episodes of Dragnet and I am in love with them. What an awesome time in radio.

It's a pity that this earlier version is so rarely seen. As much as I liked Harry Morgan, I'd love to see Friday's first partner.

Webb tried to bring Ben Alexander back as "Frank Smith" for the 1966 "pilot" movie {that wasn't seen until January 1969}, but he was already committed to co-starring with Howard Duff on ABC's "FELONY SQUAD" that fall. Webb then asked Harry Morgan to become his "new" partner, "Officer Bill Gannon", for the movie and the TV series.

"Sgt. Friday" had three partners in the original series: "Sgt. Ben Romero" [Barton Yarborough], the one originally heard on radio through December 1951, when he (and sadly, Yarborough) suddenly died of a heart attack; "Sgt. Ed Jacobs" [Barney Phillips], who disappeared after a few months because Phillips sounded too similar to Jack Webb; and "Officer Frank Smith" [Herb Ellis, then Ben Alexander in the fall of '52].
Thumbs up if Theater of Life comment sent you here

A classic cop show for the ages. Joe Friday ALWAYS played by the book.
