  • Unfortunately a lot of them are - Gemma Tumelty being a prime example. She'll be in parliament within the next 10 years voting for war and privatisation and every draconian law under the sun. Watch this space.

  • Maybe students aren't all careerist corporate whores...

  • that whole video was borderline embarrassing. opinion.

  • Are channel 4 students, that know what NUS does or even what NUS has done in the past?

Have Channel 4 researched into the constitution & seen the postitive change for Nus?

Have they even read the motion?

    NO.

Channel 4, like many other people turned up at conference, and were swayed by 'the greens' lies. By the greens banners, using wider broader issues that are not even concerned by the change to sway people into voting against change.

All this video shows, is the ignorance of channel 4.

  • Spot on edmaltby,Irishlad99UK as a delegate from Queen's University Belfast let me first inform you that Respect had at most 10% of delegates. The rest of the left were about 5% and rest of the votes(c.20%) were gained through the power of our arguments on the conference floor. The reforms would have demolished the last remaining elements of democracy in the NUS and would have mortally wounded the student movement.

  • Irishlad99, you're living in fantasy land if you really think that most students would have voted with the right at Conference 2008: for the raising of the school leaving age to 18, against free education, and for the gutting of conference as a democratic event. A minority of students even knew that Conference took place this week. How can you claim to be any more representative than the left? The base of the right is sabbs sent ex-officio, who are elected on a low turnout anyway.

  • That is the most biased, factually incorrect report I've ever read! over 690 delgates voted for reform against the 380 odd that voted against - why because the left hijacked the broken structures & manipulated them skewing opinion on conference floor with a massive over representation of groups like student respect(20% of delegates when in the real world they represent less than 5%). The only people who lost out were real students who'll be shut out of their national union for yet another year!

  • Fantastic, not just a victory for the left but for everyone who opposed the demolition job planned by the Labour students and the organised independents. I was there and the look on Gemma Tumelty's face was priceless on hearing her legacy had been shattered, and the new labour career ladder pulled from under her.Perhaps it's time the cretins of NEC showed students some respect.Speaking of which what a result in the elections.
