House Without Lights

A House Without Lights by Nimao Osman.
A tragic story about a young man called Faysal who looked after his two young sisters while they were growing up. This play is based on a true story that happened to Nimao's neighbours in Somalia, developed with involving improvisatory approaches to theatre in mind.

One of 5 short plays by new refugee writers presented as script-in-hand performances. These are personal takes on a range of experiences and from perspectives which are not commonly told. The writers' skills and development have been guided by leading playwright Sonia Hughes over a considerable period and this will be a chance to take in this fresh material almost straight from the minds of the writers themselves.

Nimao is a story teller. She started writing in 2005 at 16. She used to write all sorts of stories, for example children's stories about school, and also about the civil war in Somalia where she is from. She is keen to gain more experience in writing for theatre and so Sparks provided an ideal opportunity.

The Sparks project is a unique opportunity for emerging writers from refugee backgrounds to present theatre in their own voice. Over the last six months, nuggets of ideas have been transformed into living breathing plays, through that journey the participants have learned to communicate through characters, visuals and action. Sparks is the beginning of their writing careers in the UK.
