The project will be narrated by Academy Award™-winner Matt Damon and directed by Academy Award™-winner James Moll. A small film crew tracked the runners across the desert, capturing their incredible journey on camera, recording this landmark moment in athleticism, in humanitarianism, and in history.

The Running the Sahara documentary explores the physical and emotional impact of this tremendous test of strength and determination. The film will allow us to relive the runners' life-changing experience as we watch them brave the elements in one of the most extreme environments on Earth and meet the unique people of the Sahara, struggling with immense daily challenges.

The film's narrative follows the runners on their quest, each step toward the finish line building in great anticipation of answering the question: Can this amazing human feat truly be possible?

Through the documentary, their journey will become legend.

Running the Sahara is a documentary in the truest sense: The director and his crew documented the expedition, observing without interfering or influencing it in any way.

Running the Sahara is a LivePlanet and Allentown Production, presented by Independent Producers Alliance with financing support from Stanford Financial Group.

  • I just watched this on netflix and I have to say that, by the end, I thought charlie engle was an asshole. I understood his desire to achieve this quest but for him to expect so many to commit to a project with no end date was unrealistic of him.

When his treatment of the team members who had supported him, even past the time they had promised to stay, turned rude & inconsiderate that's when he became an asshole. Funny, you would think he'd want the film to reflect better of him.

  • @feenixrising10 If you check out the sequel for Running America you will see a wiser and much more humble Charlie Engle--He definitely gets his come uppance

  • Can anyone find the song Ambah foiye on youtube from when they are running with the kids?

  • @laurarox80 it should be available on iTunes with the RTS soundtrack

  • The human species has a strange interest for challenges.....

  • Yes it does....I give these 3 men a lot of credit!

  • I agree, I felt he was unfair to the other guys and kinda let them astray towards the end when he said he was going to walk, and then miraculously was able to run slowly again.

Glad I watched it but left me feeling sad for the other two guys!

  • @ummmmmmmidontknow And what I'm trying to say is that you are being unreasonable. I see no reason to be disappointed. This movie was inspiring, and real-life situations like these are easier said than done. I'm not sure how many ways I can say this either. So I'm just going to leave it there.

  • @Videogamefangirl Cairo is in the Sahara. The desert stretches all the way to the Red Sea. They did not run to the red sea. Hence my disappointment. I'm not sure how many ways i can say this.

  • @ummmmmmmidontknow They did cross the entire damn Sahara. By the time they were walking they were in the city of Cairo. The point is, they overcame much more than expected. They were plagued by sickness and fatigue that could easily kill them of dehydration. I'm trying to sympathize and be realistic. If you didn't listen to the movie at all, rehear again their personal experiences and opinions throughout the movie. You could see it coming a mile away that they were going to stop at some point.

  • @Videogamefangirl The point of the film was to show three guys run across the entire Sahara. That didn't happen so I was disappointed. You seem like you're making excuses for them. Of course they were tired and in pain. I was hoping they would overcome this and reach their original goal. But they didnt.

Dont get me wrong I'm thoroughly impressed and amazed by what they did, but the truth is they did not run across the entire Sahara.

  • @ummmmmmmidontknow But at that point you have to think of what they were thinking. They were tired and in pain. And who knows? They may have walked at some points too and we never noticed because the film didn't show us.

Either way, this isn't Hollywood. The point of the film was to show what REALLY happened. Not to entertain people. I repeat, documentary. What's done is done, they still ran across the ENTIRE Sahara. Try to have the physical and mental capacity to do that...

  • @ummmmmmmidontknow I think you're missing the point. Charlie was hurt and limping. Ray got this injury that they said if he kept running, it would worsen. Kevin was damn exhausted. They were running for 111 days, 70 KM a day. Unless you've run that distance yourself, you wouldn't know just how long of a distance that actually is. Keep in mind that this is a documentary, not a movie. If this was a movie and WANTED to make it dramatic, they would have ran.

  • @Videogamefangirl Obviously it was a great feat that not many people could do. I'm just saying, in the beginning they made it very clear that the ultimate goal was to run the length of the sahara. If their original goal was to walk/run the sahara it wouldnt have been quite as intriguing an ambition. And from a cinematic perspective, the fact that they walked the very end made it seem anticlimactic to me.

  • @ummmmmmmidontknow Who the hell cares if they walked to the finish? They MADE IT. They did the whole trajectory and LIVED. Instead of being critical about the fact that they were in pain near the finish, see that they did what nobody else did, one way or another. You try to run the Sahara without walking once. I'm amazed they ran the whole way except for the end to begin with. When you're in pain and have been running for 111 days, doing 70 KM A DAY, you'd want to walk too. Don't be so critical

  • I thought one of those guys' wives was fine as hell!
