"Teaching the Children Well"
Concordia Professor Emeritus Dr. Carl Schoenbeck will be the honored speaker for the eighth annual Poehler Lecture Series on Christian Faith and Learning. Schoenbeck will present his topic Teaching the Children Well: One Educators Perception of Integrating Faith and Learning, on Tuesday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m., in Buenger Education Center. The event is free and open to the public. The Poehler Lecture Series is an annual event designed to explore how Concordia University faculty have connected their Christian faith with their academic discipline. Speakers are selected based on excellence in their academic discipline and maturity in their Christian faith. The series is made possible by a gift from Robert and Elisabeth Trembath and is named in honor of The Rev. Dr. Willy August Poehler, Concordias president from 1946 -1970 and the father of Elisabeth Trembath.
Schoenbeck received his bachelors degree in Elementary Education (1965) masters in Curriculum and Instruction (1969) from Concordia Teachers College in Illinois. He earned his Ph.D. in Educational Administration at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Schoenbeck began his career as a teacher at Concordia Lutheran School in Rockford, Ill. (1965-1974), where he taught grades 5-8. He served as principal and teacher at King of Kings Lutheran School in Roseville, Minn. (1975-1981). He joined Concordia in 1981as a professor of Education. During his time as a tenured professor at Concordia, Schoenbeck served as chair of the Division of Education (1989-1995), the Department of Teacher Education (1989-1995), and served on a variety of academic committees within the University. Schoenbeck served appointed vice president of Academic Affairs in 1995, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 2006. He continued to serve the University from 2006-2008, as director of Institutional Planning and Accreditation, leading the Universitys successful reaccreditation in 2008 with The Higher Learning Commission-North Central Association.
The Poehler Lecture Series is funded by charitable gifts from Ted Trembath, and Robert and Elisabeth Trembath, and through contributions from other benefactors.
