Mary Lou Retton - Vault - 1984 Summer Olympic Games

Mary Lou Retton (born January 24, 1968 in Fairmont, West Virginia) is an American gymnast. She was the first female gymnast outside Eastern Europe to win the Olympic all-around title.

Bit difficult, seeing as there was no Russia? Mary Lou would have medalled on vault regardless of who was there or not, because she was excellent on it. However, she was extremely lucky that the Soviets weren't there and that Ecaterina Szabo fell. The Soviet 1984 team competed at the Olomouc Friendship Games, so yes it is actually possible to compare the quality of gymnasts that year. Fact is, Olga Mostepanova would have won the AA.

There are a LOT of athletes from that Games who could say the same thing. The truth is, we'll never know.

This jump om Mary was really perfect and amazing but I believe, that in general Szabo was better then Retton. She won 3 golds from all 4 apparatus, including vault.

It is so sad that stupid soviet politicians did not allow the team to go to LA. For that time gymnastic teams of USA and Romania were in perfect conditions and I believe that existence of very strong Soviet team would make a battle for medals more dramatic and interesting...
