Southern Wisconsin - Severe Storms - June 8, 2011

A severe thunderstorm developed over Grant County, Wisconsin and moved into Iowa County near Dodgeville along highway 18/151. The storm had Supercell characteristics with visible striations at its mid levels with a decent wall cloud that shortly developed as it moved toward Dodgeville. Even though the wall cloud looked impressive, it had very weak rotation.

We decided to keep up with the storm east on Highway 18/151 through Iowa County. Several close cloud to ground strikes were observed. We drove underneath the wall cloud/mesocyclone, but the rotation remained very weak. We traveled south on highway 78 from Mount Horeb in Western Dane County and the storms to our west began to congeal into a line, while the wall cloud/meso was to our north. This feature eventually went on to produce the EF-1 tornado near Verona which was 10 miles to our east.

We traveled east on Highway A across Southern Dane County near Oregon, Wisconsin to try to stay ahead of the outflow/gust front from behind us. Several mini-gustandoes or just plain gust was kicked up in the air from the outflow winds. We then let the storm overtake us in Southeastern Dane County near Albion, Wisconsin. Many large tree branches were damaged from the winds but we didn't see any uprooted trees. Winds were estimated around 45 to 65 mph.
