Seth and Mike went to Matt and Hank with this idea for a cameo and they were both for it. In fact Hank's lines in this scene as Comic Book Guy were completely improve.
One of the best moments in the series!

I think comic book guys was a great as a minor character on the Simpsons when they decided to give him more screen time and character development on the Simpsons he became more annoying I grew to dislike him.
