Jackie Kay reads three poems, 'In My Country', 'Somebody Else' and 'Darling', from the DVD-book IN PERSON: 30 POETS, filmed by Pamela Robertson-Pearce & edited by Neil Astley (Bloodaxe Books, 2008): http://www.bloodaxebooks.com/titlepage.asp?isbn=1852248009 Jackie Kay was an adopted child of Scottish/Nigerian descent brought up by Scottish parents. With humour and emotional directness, her poetry explores gender, sexuality, identity, racism and cultural difference as well as love and music. Her poems draw on her own life and the lives of others to make a tapestry of voice and communal understanding. We filmed her at her home in Manchester in 2007. These three poems by Jackie Kay are from her book DARLING: NEW & SELECTED POEMS (Bloodaxe Books, 2007): http://www.bloodaxebooks.com/titlepage.asp?isbn=1852247770

  • black and gay ..that's brave but ..scottish as well c'mon! ... that's too many crosses for one poor bint.

  • I never fail to be moved by her Poems. Especially at difficult times, she provides great solace.

  • Does any one know where to get her poem called "Gambia" because I really need it now. Thank you.

  • I've met Jackie Kay, and she's a wonderful human being. Nuff said.

  • I appreciate the mechanics of her poetry; how she will visibly process the event from that mill of live emotion and through the simple fact or her openness, give permission to experience these happenings with her. There is no rote about it.

    I like that very much.

  • Beautiful.

  • Amazing, simply amazing

  • great poet,A star is born, wonder if she remembers me
