Sounds like you didn't follow Minecraft since Alpha. Minecraft maps ARE infinite, however the player is only allowed to walk on 32 million blocks, including air as block. If you go over that limit, the map will still load, but there will be no vegatation, and no ores. And about those chunks, that's why a PC can handle it, it loads in chunks, block by block. Minecraft Wiki shows some really interesting information about these things.
