@pkdukesnides1 yes we can do everything possible in photography with this DSLR, dont under estimate it =) its one of the best DSLRs for those who are new to photography, CHEAP, GOOD, QUALITY WISE great....continous shooting mode is good, but not as good as the later models, its 3 Frames per second (i dont use continous mode)
but if you are considering buying this DSLR i say go for later ALPHA models, they up to date and the mega pixels go way high than this one (10.2)

@waqasyasin why do you say for starters, does it not have many capabilities or something, and can you slow down the shutter speed and what is the continuos shooting mode like?

@pkdukesnides1 why not??its an awsome camera for starters, but if you increase your budget a bit, i suggest go for Nikon D3100, else go for D5100..
i personally own Sony a200, and Nikon D5100....started off from a200, now moved to D5100...love both my DSLRs =)

This camera is a totally awesome entry level DSLR. I am so satisfied with it.

Sony a200 is better than the d40, the d40 has 6 mega pixels and only 3 af points where this camera has 10 mega pixels and 9 af points.
Its a much better camera and the only thing going for the d40 is the brand name.
