One day in June, 1973, three months before the bombing by Pinochet's military coup, I was walking through the plaza in front of the Palace of Finance in Santiago, Chile, and saw a street singer shouting, "The people united will never be defeated" - a well known Chilean chant for social change. I couldn't stop, and continued across the square, but his incessant chanting followed me and stuck in my mind.

On the following Sunday, after the broadcast of the show "Chile Says No to Civil War", which I directed for Channel 9, we went with a few artists to eat at my house outside Santiago. Upon arrival I sat down at my piano and thought about the experience in the plaza and the events at large. When I reproduced the chant of the people in my head, the chant that could not be restrained, the entire melody exploded from me: I saw it complete and played it in its entirety at once. The text unfurled itself quickly and fell, like falling rocks, upon the melody. In their enthusiasm some of my guests made suggestions that were too rational for the situation I was composing in. Out of courtesy I pretended to accept, but arranged myself to leave the text in its symptomatic landscape.

The song was performed in public two days later by the group Quilapayun in a heavily attended concert in the Alameda.

  • @peterHmode also Bernie Maddoff was a thief who is now in prison, the law was never on Bernie Maddoff's side!

  • @peterHmode I can see quite well, and its not the right wing that has the banks in hand, its the far left socialists that have created the problem, Bernie Maddoff got away with what he did because the politicians were looking the other way, all they saw was the money and took no interests in how it was being made! true capitalism was not being practiced "crony capitalism" was. & that was the problem.

  • @ABGAN100

You are blind. And I am not even feeling like to discuss after you say that it is not the banks and not the financial corporations hand in hand with the right wing politicians made this mess under the capitalist flag for the "patria" and for us.

They make millions when everyone else is falling down. They change the law where ever it needs to be... like they did 1991 and look Bernie Maddoff bloody games of the millionaires and we the rest all suffering...

  • It's not the bank you should fear it's the Unions who give their politicians millions in tax payer money to elect them. Spain has in the last 8 years lived under the control of the socialist party put in power by the ignorant masses voting for them, Its time to wake up the people have been brain washed in to believing the their problems are the result of the banks an corporation, instead of the truth that socialism is the cause of all their ills.

  • Gran canción, gracias Chile!

  • The word "democracy" (Greek: δημοκρατία (dimokratia)) combines the elements dêmos (δῆμος, which means "people" in ancient greek) and krátos (κράτος, which means "force" or "power").From this etymology you don't need anything else.

  • time for another inquisition !! no place left to colonize...por todas las cosas malas, todo se paga !!!!
