You don't, one can be doing all the work and the other nothing, but both drivers know approximately how much power is required to move the train and drive their loco accordingly to provide about half that power. All down to experience.

This rail line goes through a high altitude arrid countryside very similar to San Luis Valley. Beautiful! I want to see it someday.

Amazing, what i really like about it is that it doesn't look like a museum piece, its the real thing, awesome landscape too
