CNN has just called Virginia's 13 electoral votes for Obama.

No Democratic candidate for President had won Virginia since 1964.

Then, within minutes: "We can report history. Barack Obama is projected to be the next President of the United States of America."

This is the election night party held by the Virginia Democrats at Toad's Place of Richmond.

Virginia also gained a 2nd Democratic seat in the Senate with former Governor Mark Warner's landslide victory.

Virginia flipped blue!

This party took place in Shockoe Slip in downtown Richmond. Be sure to check out the many videos others have posted of jubilant VCU students at this moment spontaneously streaming out into the streets, marching peacefully down Broad Street to City Hall, climbing onto signs, etc.

*Audio is a bit loud.

  • Very nice. You defied the country's expectations, Virginia. I like to think I helped out from my safe blue haven of New York by calling Virginian voters, but it was you guys who actually went out and voted and turned your red state blue. Thank you so so much.

  • color the country blue, baby!!!

  • He is going to win Virginia 2012 again!!

  • This surprised me. I'm a native Virginian and where I'm from, it's very mixed politically. Where I'm from tends to have a slight Republican lean, but in this day, I'm so proud of the Old Dominion. Three years later, and the feelings are just as real now as it was then. Now, in 2012, that's when we'll see people's true colors. I'm not being negative or positive, but I'm just watching and waiting. only time will tell.

  • What a beautiful sight!! White & Black, Old & young all together in a historic moment!

  • Ohh what a night. The difference between 2008 and 2004 elections where stark. One of the happiest moments in American History, for once you guys made the right choice. But boy was it close, look at the popular vote, still got alot of republicans voting against their interest.

  • I'm a Virginia Voter and vote by who I think would be best for the job. I don't care about the two party systems and don't feel a need to be associated with one of them. It seems like more Virginian voters are getting more like that. Unlike other states such as New York and Alabama

  • Thank you VA!!!! I'm so proud of you...wish KY would have done the same...MAYBE?? someday {in my dreams) Mitch & Bunning, God bless our President. So sorry KY is in the dark!!!!

  • I guess I haven't done my Virginia history research as thurally as people expect.

  • Let's not forget, the birthplace of Metoaka--Pocahontas to you.

  • That too.

  • ....Not to mention 'The Mother of Presidents'.
