There is a mathematical phenomenon called the golden ratio. This ratio is approximately 1.618. It is a naturally occurring number that can be seen in all aspects of nature - from the numbers of petals of flowers, human anatomy, and even DNA helixes. This ratio has both intrigued mathematicians and biologists for years. There is also a sequence, called the Fibonacci sequence, which is intimately related to golden ratio. A given number in the Fibonacci sequence equals the sum of the two terms before it (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55 ...). The ratio of a Fibonacci number to the one before it approaches the golden ratio as the sequence goes on and on. In my composition, all of the melody and most of the rhythmic phrases are based on the Fibonacci numbers. The piano that you will hear has been tuned to the first several Fibonacci numbers in respect to hertz, cents, and semitones. Several of the percussion instruments play subdivisions that are equal to the first few Fibonacci numbers. Try to spot the phrases if you can!
