This is a documentary about St. Nicholas. He lived back in the 4th-5th century. He was originally entombed in what today is Turkey. His bones were literally hijacked to a church in Italy where they are today. See the computer generated picture of his face. He looks much like Santa Claus of today.

  • He was Bishop of Myra; attended the Nicean Council in 325, and was imprisoned for the faith. He worked many miracles, including raising the dead and is one of the most revered Saints in Europe.

  • @fiona3637 Very interesting. This special didn't dwell on that. When they revealed the reconstruction of his face, he resembles what we think Santa Claus looks like today. At least that was my impression. If he did have silver hair and a beard, he would bear a likeness to our Santa Claus. The only way to know for sure if he had a beard is to study the paintings of him. Most of which show him with a beard.

  • Was good ol' St. Nick a blood drinking Mason?

  • @13CIRCLE Not as far as I know. Catholic Church frowns on that you know.

  • @13CIRCLE Not even. Catholics are not allowed to practice another faith and the Masons are considered a religion. A couple of the Protestant faiths won't allow their members to join the Masons either.

  • @napachild The oldest image of Saint Nicholas, that i found, is a lot different from the one you show. Check out the Ukrainian Icon painting. 1475 painting. Let me know what u think. Do you know of any older depictions? I know why his depiction has changed over the years, but I was amazed at his early depictions.

  • @platosacademy Thank you so much for the information and the compliment. I'm glad you think this video is accurate. What strikes me is the rendition of his face and bust. How much he looks like the visual images we get when looking at Santa Claus.

  • @napachild Yes it is true that he did live before the great schism that split up the churches in 1054 but he was of Greek decent. He lived in Lyra, which was at the time a Greek speaking city under the Roman Empire. But he is remembered by both Orthodox and Catholic Christians. Great video by the way I really enjoyed it.

  • @platosacademy Thank you for the information. Does that mean he was Greek Orthodox and not Roman Catholic? I believe he lived during the time the church was still "together" before it branched off into Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox.

  • The story of Santa Clause was based off of a Greek saint. Learn more at: platos-academyDOTcom - A blog about everything Greek.
