This video is a exciting cycling race that put YOU in the middle of the action! Unlike the tour videos, this video is on a racer's (me) helmet cam so YOU see what I see!

Info about myself:
I'm a recent Cat 2 upgrade on Cycling Science. It's my first attempt using the Oregon Scientific ATC2k helmet camera in a race. It's positioned on top of my helmet. At some points the camera is a little off since I can't focus on my head position during the entire race. However, I did edit out a few parts that didn't show well.

About the race:
This is the Pro/1/2/3 race put on in Ontario, Ca by the D.A.R.E racing team. It's a sunny day with a ~15 mph wind. This movie has the beginning few laps of the race with one crash due to a rider throwing his shoulder into another rider = 10 person pile-up. The end result is a possible suspension for the rest of the year.

Music:
Ready, Steady, Go by Paul Oakenfold

  • What is the theme music of the first one? Thanks guys..

  • @Pilotehongrois The first song is 'Ready, Steady, Go' from Paul Oakenfold. I'l make sure to include this information in the description. Thanks!

  • Was that a real Rock Racing Pro with the Rock kit?

Also how long does it take to get in the Cat 1- and 2's...or atleast high enough to be able to race against domestic pro's? I ask becuase I was wondering if it was possible to reach that high an amateur level with decent genes and physiology (Vo2 and LT) but nothing too slowtwitch or exceptional and starting at age 22?

  • The time it takes depends on how badly you want it and commit to cycling. A few of my friends got their Cat 2 license in about 2-3 years starting at age 19... but they were very dedicated. I've raced for over 7 years and got my Cat 2 when I was 20 = 5th year.

There is a big difference between Cat 3 & 2 so you've got to be good!

There are occassional Cat 1-2-3 races so you might be able to race them with a Cat 3... but it's not very common anymore.

  • Overall, you can certainly reach a Cat 2 at your age... It's not an easy road, but LOTS of fun and you meet great people at the races. Make sure to set smaller goals along the way so you don't burn out before you reach your goal

  • The Rock Racer was probably a Pro or at least a Pro-in-training = still a Cat 2, but almost ready for the big time.

I'ts really cool to race against the big name people & teams. I've raced against Toyota United, HealthNet, Jelly Belly, a few Olympians, Sierra Nevada, Successful Living (my good friend is on that team) and a few European teams... just to name a few ^_^

  • what place did you get?

  • Yeah, this course was soooo wide and smooth that people didn't need to scrunch as much. In addition, there was a much bigger race going on the same day, so there wasn't as large a competition.

  • You probably already found out that this race course is not the sam as the Ontario GP. They usually host a number of races throughout the season and mix up the courses betweena few different routes.

  • Great Vid Colter. Is this the same layout that they'll be using this Sunday for the Ontario GP? I read that it's 7 corners, 1.2 miles. If so, I only count 4 corners. But I love those high speed attacks. AWESOME!
