Samsung has a 27" 2560 x 1440 IPS monitor with LED backlighting available for $900.
Comparing that to the $1,700 retail price of the 27" iMac, that leaves you with $800 which is more than enough to build a PC which would not only compete with, but also beat the iMac. For the same price, or possibly lower depending on where you buy the parts.
