German Waffen Sword $1,400
- DOVE HEAD ARMY OFFICER SWORD - Siegfried Waffen
This example has the bronze like color tone to the brass frequently seen produced by this maker. Pack swords are easily distinguishable by this unique color. There is still some gilt remaining across the surfaces of this hilt and it appears to rate at about 85-90%. The pommel, backstrap and "D" guard feature raised out oak leaf sprigs. The ferrule features more of the same. The crossguard is composed of an open-winged bird, which is highly detailed. It is obvious someone spent a lot of time hand-enhancing the feathering to the wings, the feathering to the breast and also the head detail. The same period artisan lent his talent to enhancing the oak leaves and acorns throughout the rest of the hilt. This hilt is identical to the example shown in Angolia on page 112. The grip is a fine black celluloid over wood. It is in perfect condition and is wrapped with triple-twisted wire. The wire is of small girth and the center example is slightly larger. The fine long blade measures 34-inches in length. It is the matte finish frequently used by this producer on later made swords. The blade is in mint condition. The reverse ricasso is etched with the large Siegfried Waffen trademark. It features a horseshoe device which encloses details of the firm. Inside is the hammering Wagnerian hero. The scabbard is nice and straight throughout and has outstanding original paint. This paint still retains its original luster and is in near mint condition. This is a fine sword and not a commonly seen example. Excellent Plus, Plus
