El Teatro Compasión: Art. Activism. Theater. Music. Film.

Committed to creating performance art works that shed light on various social issues.

El Teatro Compasión is committed to creating performance art works that shed light on various social issues that we believe need to be addressed and solved by our collective humanity.
Currently we are working on a live performance art piece that tells the story of Bella Beata, B.B. for short.

This one-woman play with music follows B.B.'s journey from a teenager living on the streets though her later adulthood. Through it all B.B. retains her biting humor to tell her story and protect herself from her harsh life experiences.

What makes this performance art piece different is that El Teatro Compasión will be working with the local homeless population in Gilroy, CA to create and produce this piece.

We will partner professional writers, actors, musicians and teaching artists to work with the clients of the The Gilroy Compassion Center to create the final theatrical piece that we will unveil in a workshop production scheduled for Spring 2014.

The affluent community of Gilroy, CA has the highest recorded population of homeless individuals in South Silicon Valley. As performance activists we have selected to work in this community specifically because we believe that the residents of Gilroy, CA can make a significant change in this reality and have the disposable resources to do so.

Unfortunately, we believe that the majority of this particular community doesn't realize the dire need for support services for their homeless neighbors. We also aim to eliminate stereotypes and illuminate the fact that most homeless people are in fact, provide a positive contribution to our society. They are families who work, but due to circumstances to not have a home to call their own, do not have medical care for their children, nor enough food to eat.

They are prideful people that want to change their life circumstances and deserve the respect and compassion that they need to become success stories.

In the meantime we will be working with these remarkable human beings to tell their stories and shed light on the necessities for basic services to help people who are struggling to get back on their feet.

One of the goals for this project is also to create opportunities for valuable work-force training skills such as; live event management and production; marketing and public relations; website creation and use of social media; sound and light rigging and operation; set construction; creating PowerPoint visuals for the performance artwork and many, many other tasks that will be required to help make this theatrical piece a reality.

With your generous donation, in any amount, we believe that together we can make a significant change for the better. Thank you so much for your consideration and support.

—Stephanie R. Woehrmann, Artistic Director, El Teatro Compasión
