A close look at the Winchester '97.
Sorry, it's too cold for me to go out shooting this time of year.

  • I just bought a 1897 28" barrel with a full choke. From the serial number I think it was made in 1922. I know they were made for 2 1/2" shotgun shells, but will they work with 2 3/4" shells?

  • @rudy43norvelle 2 3/4" shells are actually 2 1/2" long. 2 3/4 is just the modern reference notation for the size.

(Before the trolls posts anything stupid, they should get a ruler and check)

The extra 1/4" in the modern notation is the crimp, that rolled up paper or folded up plastic that covers the mouth of the hull.

Go ahead and use them, just be careful, there's no real safety on that gun.

  • Nice video! I bought a 30in bbl, full choke 1906 mfg takedown variant for $100 at a gun show a few months back and I've been working on fixing it. I think I'm upside-down on it now (new stock set and slide) but its a neat gun and I'm happy to have saved it from being parted out.

I did completely tear it down for a complete cleaning and I must say that John Browning, although brilliant, liked making things complicated. After messing with it for a while its really not that hard to work on.

  • @Alibi1986 Nice find, and great price! congratulations.

You're right about the complexity, but since it's still mechanically functional after 106 years of service I'd say JNB had that design down.

Don't sweat the money you sank into it, chances are good you'll get it back. The folks looking for these are shooters, not collectors.

  • how much is one of these worth? my buddy adam has one and i was just wondering what there worth cuz they look awesome.

  • @4KawasakiRider4

You can find them in the $400-600 range in average condition if you do some searching..

They're real popular with the CAS guys so they get snapped up quick.

You'll also see on-line sellers asking twice that hoping for a sucker.

There's a whole bunch of military trench gun and police riot gun fakes so be real careful.

All of the Norinco clones I've seen have been garbage, every single one, so avoid them.

  • @Marcucco I actually found another one. 12 ga, 28 in bbl, Mod choke, 1908 mfg. I paid just under $200 from a pawn shop since it wouldn't cycle. The mag tube was brazed to the take-down extension but after cutting through it with a file I took the gun down, cleaned it, replaced the broken main spring and a few other small odds and ends, and shot it. Its a fantastic, classic shotgun that's a lot of fun at the range. I'll probably keep them both since I really don't have much in them..

  • @Marcucco I bought the 30" full choke model from Cabales not too long ago for $400. Seems nice but I have a few questions for you as you seem to know what you're talking about. When you have your gun cocked and you point it muzzle down does the firing pin fall foreward flush with the back of the bolt? In other words does it move freely and rattle back and forth if you move the gun back and forth quickly?

Also my takedown pin goes flush on what seems to be the wrong side of the magazine tube.

  • My grandpa just gave me an 1897 it's a beautiful gun. Same thing it hurt me to see one of my screws striped from a misfitting screwdriver.

  • "sodomized"? haha, that earned a sub from me. For real though, awesome video.
