Fatalities Rising in US Vehicle-animal Crashes

Fatalities from vehicle crashes with deer and other animals have more than doubled over the past 15 years, according to a new study by an auto insurance-funded highway safety group that cites urban sprawl overlapping into deer habitat. (Oct. 30)

I don't hunt but support hunters if they kill for food and not to just kill. But one reason for more accidents with deer is that our urban sprawl is getting bigger causing a more dense deer population in a smaller area. I would bet if they surveyed where the majority of accidents occured they would find areas very highly concentrated due to smaller living spaces for deer rather than in just random places anywhere.

one of the major reasons for fatalities is NOT because people aren't buckled up. It's because the natural reaction for many people is to swerve to avoid hitting the deer. I can't count the # of head-on collisions I've seen involving someone freaking out and swerving into oncoming traffic.

Secondly, accidents involving deer aren't limited to over-populated areas. Anywhere there is a road, there are bound to be deer crossing them. It happens just as much in rurally-populated areas.

@oldsgtjoe Bear rarely actively hunt prey, and big cats/ wolves don't discriminate between helpless prey, such as deer, small children, and domestic pets. safe and effective deer hunting is thus a safe and effective way to hunt deer. note that gun hunting is illegal in close proximity to highways.
