  • I've been wanting to build a F-N-R box for a while, and stumbled on your video.

Do you have any cad drawings that you would be willing to share?

How did you hold the gears to the shafts? I have a full machine shop here at home including a CNC, and I'm verycapable of building one. My stumbling block is internal splines,. Thanks for any help. Dan

  • @dantech1 Gears are splined to the shaft. You can cut internal splines several ways if you get creative. Nibbling away with a custom ground cutting tool mounted in the tail stock of a lathe (ie like a shaper) for example. A little slow but for just a few gears it works fine. Or turn a tapered shaft from tool steel round stock, then cross cut teeth in it to make a custom broach. Leave plenty of room between teeth for chips and press it through in a manual press. Works good for serations

  • Tim-

I was curious about the 3d model that I saw of the gearcase housing. Was that model created in Autodesk inventor, Autocad or some other software?

oh and thank you for the praisful comment earlier on my stainless steel railing video. Let me know about the modeling program because it looks like the kind of modeling that I've done in Inventor.

    Thanks again,

    LIEddie

  • I use Alibre Design for CAD work. It a really easy program to learn and use and a lot easier on the pocket book than many of the other CAD programs out there. I would highly recommend it.

  • Yes it is in use. Has been for over a year. The gears are made from 4340.

  • Looking good Tim. Has it been installed into the car yet? What material are the gears cut out of?
