I agree with you. Your experience with the NFL player vs Michael Phelps is not surprising. NFL, NBA, MLB, big soccer players, etc, all these ppl make a shit load of money and money changes ppl.

Michael is an amateur athlete (as most Olympians are) and not a gazzillionare (he probably will be now). Lost of Olympians no matter how succesful they are live at home and have have very normal lives and are humble people. Olympians really are true sportsmen and role models.
