CIBA Ontario Championship
Game One: Durham defeated Humber 6-0
Game Two: Durham defeated Humber 3-0
*In game two, Lords starting pitcher Shaun Slemko was one out away from pitching a perfect game
OSHAWA, Ont. -- The Durham College baseball team won their second consecutive Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association (CIBA) Ontario title on Sunday afternoon as they swept Humber College 2-0 in the championship series at Kinsmen Memorial Stadium.
The championship victory marks the Lords sixth Ontario championship in the last seven years and secures their spot in the CIBA National Championship set to take place in Moncton, New Brunswick from October 21-23.
In game two of the finals, Lords starting pitcher Shaun Slemko (Courtice, Ont.) was one out away from pitching a perfect game, but Russ Hazen of Humber broke it up with a slow rolling infield hit. The Lords would take care of business during the next at bat getting Humber to fly out, as the Lords earned their seventh Ontario title.
Slemko finished the game with nine strikeouts, allowing only one hit and no walks.
Veteran pitcher Julian Daligadu picked up the win in game one, with James Rowe and Jake Olynyk pitching in relief to preserve the shutout. The trio, all from Whitby, allowed six hits while striking out five Humber batters.
Troy McLoughlin (Newmarket, Ont.) had a big day at the plate for the Lords going 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Tyler Mitchell (Whitby, Ont.) had three RBI's in game one.
Durham and Humber, who have both advanced to the Canadian championship, will look to bring the national title back to Ontario for the first time since 2004 (Queen's). In their last five trips to Nationals, Durham has made four final four appearances.
For coach Dempster and the Lords baseball program, it will be their ninth trip (seventh straight) to the National Championship. The Lords have never played in the championship game.
Today's CIBA Ontario final appearance marked the 14th straight year the Lords had advanced to the provincial finals. Last season, Durham swept Humber 2-0 in the Ontario Championship.
