I was there that night, what a "sickner" we lost it at Maine Rd, the rest has gone down in history.
The Rocker Roar that night was something else. Hi to Barry Gate if you ever read this.

@thaistevie Sunderland were really struggling that season , but what started it was the game against Middlesbrough on February 17th 1973 , when Sunderland beat boro 4.0 , at Roker Park Halom scored his first goal i think. I was in the paddocks, and I just had a premunition , as a Boro fan, something was going to happen. The week after Sunderland played City at maine Road

Perfect. My favourite match ever at Roker, my favourite goal and my favourite player.Vic was my hero. Gutted when they sold him. Remember his hat-trick against Derby in a Cup replay ? I can also remember him scoring a hat-trick for Oldham on MOTD.

Brilliant match - I was there with me dad and our youngun - when Jackie Charlton said that Leeds were gonna walk all ower us in the final, I sat there thinking - if we play anything like we did against Man City they won't!

I still have a piece of that nights Roker Park atmosphere in my back pocket. I was a 13 year old standing on a cake tin in the main stand paddock, right behind Vic's shot. I've been lucky enough to travel the world since, but have never experienced anything quite like it. That was truly an extraordinary evening, we're unlikely to see again - the sea fret in the floodlights, and a noise that still sends a shudder down the spine.
As a long standing Leeds fan I've alwyas fallen for the myth that Sunderland were lucky in 73 or Leeds were poor. But watching how Sunderland got there (Arsenal, City etc) makes you realise how well they combined skill, muscularity and teamwork. A belated well done to you.
