My buddy Keith and I attended a star party at the dark site of the Riverside Astronomical Society. It happened to be Messier Marathon time which we realized when we saw how crowded it was at the site. It was fun talking to people and spending time looking through the big 22" scope they have there.

NOTE: Youtube won't let me make this video playable on mobile probably because of the music in it. Sorry!

  • great vid guys.i have a 10 inch tmb apo refractor i bought a few years before thomas died.i have a place here in tn called cades cove where we get mag 10 skies.no lights at all.its inside a mountain cove.so i tote my tmb and ap 1200 mount up there.

  • @TheHemiphil81 A 10" apo refractor and an AP mount?! That must cost a small fortune heh... Luck you.

  • I envy you guys, here in New Jersey there is so much light pollution that you can't even see Polaris.

  • @LiberalJerseyman We have the same problem in the city here (though maybe not quite that bad), but it is true that the west half of the US has significantly more dark areas to go to. It's hard to find a really good dark site on the eastern half of the country. I feel kind of bad for you guys over there. The site in this video is about a 2 hour drive from where I live, and there are somewhat darker sites 30-60 mins further out.

  • 5:51 I've only noticed "Earth shine" recently, didn't know it had a name. I recently got prescription glasses which have improved my l long distance eye sight. I cannot describe the improvement. I've always loved the night sky and am a massive fan of the moon/apollo missions etc. So when I Was going for a walk one night I noticed this. I thought why is the moon lit when it should be in the suns shadow? I figured it must be reflected light, but I never thought it was called "earthshine!". Thanks.

  • @Designandrew Yeah it's pretty cool to see. Remember that the phase of the Earth from the moon is opposite what the moon's phase is from the Earth. So, when the moon is a crescent, the Earth is gibbous. So, the smaller the phase of the moon, the brighter the Earthshine is.
