Filmmakers@Google: Ed Saxon

Film producer Ed Saxon visits Google's Santa Monica, CA office to discuss "Yesterday's History, Tomorrow's a Mystery: The Creative Process of Filmmaking and Its Place in the Googleplex." This event took place on December 5, 2008, as part of the Filmmakers@Google series.

Raised in St, Louis, Missouri, Ed Saxon is a graduate of the USC Peter Stark Producing Program and McGill University. He produced THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, which is, to date, the third and most recent film to sweep the five main categories at the Academy Awards - Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture. In 2009, Focus Features will release Saxon's latest picture - a road trip comedy entitled FARLANDERS directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes. As a filmmaker, Saxon has always had an interest in making socially-aware films. In 1993 he produced PHILADELPHIA , the first feature film to openly discuss AIDS (Tom Hanks received Best Actor Oscar for his role in the picture). He executive produced Richard Linklater's FAST FOOD NATION in 2006, which explored the ethical practices of the fast food business. Saxon has also produced several documentaries, most notably MANDELA - the Oscar winning account of the South African leader from humble beginnings to the Nobel Prize. Mr. Saxon is a founding Advisory Board member of the INDEPENDENT FILM CHANNEL. His other feature films include: ADAPTATION, THE TRUTH ABOUT CHARLIE, THE OPPORTUNISTS, BELOVED, ULEE'S GOLD, THAT THING YOU DO!, DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS, MIAMI BLUES, MARRIED TO THE MOB, SOMETHING WILD, STOREFRONT HITCHCOCK, and COUSIN BOBBY. In television, Saxon has produced: SUBWAY STORIES: TALES FROM THE UNDERGROUND, and HAITI DREAMS OF DEMOCRACY. He's married to the artist, Kirsten Coyne. They have two young daughters and live in Los Angeles.
