Yea, iempoor is right. By the time you do get doored, it'll have already been too late since you are closest to the car when in the blind spot.

Car doors and getting struck at night are the leading killers of cyclists. A car door opens and you'll either swerve in front of the traffic beside you, or you can run into and then probably fall into traffic.

the cyclists should practice the same precautions that motorcyclists do. We constantly have to be on the lookout for other drivers trying to kill us. If you're riding in the bike lane, and there's a car ahead, slow down to a speed that you can stop in time. Don't be stupid people.

Good advice, but the issue with this lane was that a guy was killed because someone was double parked in the bike lane and he had to go around, and was then doored by that same vehicle and run over.

Sorry about the cyclists, but hey its NYC, and you can go down the wrong street, and get murdered by some crack head just as easily

Change in a place like this will come only when the world has no more oil...

If you open your door, without checking to see if there is an on coming vehicle, and an on coming vehicle smashs into your door, is that vehicle travelling too fast? No. It has nothing to do with the speed of the vehicle that hit the door. It has to do with irresponsible drivers not checking their mirrors to see if it is safe to open their doors. PERIOD.

Oh, yeah. BTW. If one gets doored, like the one gentleman, it doesn't matter how fast, or slow, you may be travelling. When one gets doored, there is NO time to respond with an evasive maneuver. The only time I've been doored I was travelling quite slowly (about 5mph). When this guy opened his front door (without checking his rearview mirror), I was just passing by the rear door. How in the hell could you say I was 'travelling too fast'? OR ANYBODY THAT GETS DOORED!!!!!!
