Sirmione was first appreciated by the Romans for its healing thermal springs, bubbling up naturally from the lake bed and as the home of Catullo, the Roman poet. Clustered within the ancient walls of the impressive Scaligeri Castle, the honey-coloured buildings and maze of tiny cobbled streets in the old town seem untouched by the 21st Century. However, on closer investigation, the busy pavement cafés, the elegant shops and bright, modern yachts bobbing in the harbour all reveal the town's popular resort status.
