Paul Ryan Booed By Seniors At Town Hall Meeting in Milton, Wisconsin 4-2011

During a town hall meeting in Milton, a constituent who described himself as a "lifelong conservative" asked Ryan about the effects of growing income inequality in our nation. The constituent noted that huge income disparities contributed to the Great Depression and the Great Recession, and thus wanted to know why the congressman was "fighting to not let the tax breaks for the wealthy expire."

Ryan argued against "redistribut[ing" in this manner. After the constituent noted that "there's nothing wrong with taxing the top because it does not trickle down," Ryan argued that "we do tax the top." This response earned a chorus of boos from constituents:

CONSTITUENT: The middle class is disappearing right now. During this time of prosperity, the top 1 percent was taking about 10 percent of the total annual income, but yet today we are fighting to not let the tax breaks for the wealthy expire? And we're fighting to not raise the Social Security cap from $87,000? I think we're wrong.

RYAN: A couple things. I don't disagree with the premise of what you're saying. The question is what's the best way to do this. Is it to redistribute... (Crosstalk)

CONSTITUENT: You have to lower spending. But it's a matter of there's nothing wrong with taxing the top because it does not trickle down.

RYAN: We do tax the top.

I'm a quazi tea party member, but what people need to understand is that Paul might be TECHNICALLY right about the tax rate, but after all the loop holes, the US EFFECTIVE tax rate is one of the lowest in the world. The rich have lobbied their way into loopholes while still crying their taxed at a high rate which is fundamentally untrue.

Do people still swallow the old "trickle down theory"? It's ridiculous! It's never worked in the past and it won't work now. Just look at what the Big Banks did with all of the bailout money - they sat it. No loans to small business. No loans to big business. No mortgages. And what do the rich people do with all of their tax break money? Do they create good jobs that pay well? No. They go shopping (high end stores have seen profits soar) and they buy a new jet.

@jsamples37 ... if you knew your history, you'd NEVER have voted for repubicans, in the first place. If you knew your history, you would know that republicans brought us our first Great Depression. Their economic policies were reformed by Franklin D Roosevelt which saved our economy, made us a world power, and it wasnt until Reagan, and enough time for people to forget what Republicans do, that Americans let themselves back in for the same mess all over again. History is repeating itself.
