@kpsuk Okay, you got a point, but if he improved his technique, he would be even better...Look at Lochte stroke...He improved so much his technique that he is one of the very best now..
@GMZTORP Thats to enhance his breathing since he is a right side breather he needs to have his left arm hold water to allow him to take a longer breath while still having forward momentum and speed. I swim like him not at perfect in technique but like him but i breath to the left so my right arm stays a bit longer out in front
so...Even Michael Phelps has to improve his stroke...As you can see his left arm goes a little bit to the left compared with his right arm which goes straight down and back..
The S movement he's making with the arms helps you go faster when your bring the water in towards you.

@QuantomQuality btw he isn't looking at the bottom of the pool your ment to keep your head looking forward, like he is doing.

Well, when you say "has to" you could mean "could do", given he holds just about every medal and record he can, I'd say he doesn't "have to".
