Suicidal Depression & Suicide Prevention Mental Health Video. Point of Return (1965). Recounts events culminating in a suicide attempt. A panel comments on the incidents of suicide, the effect on survivors and the need for preventive programs. In the first half of the film, a man contemplates killing himself. In the second part, a group of psychologists discuss real life suicide scenarios and suicide prevention. This video is about all the events leading up to a man's suicide attempt. Afterwards, a roundtable of doctors discussed the victim's actions and possible rehabilitation, as well as the psychological healing techniques that could help him; 23 Minutes. Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of. Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God. If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law. Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide. We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives. Suicide is the act of one who causes his own death, either by positively destroying his own life, as by inflicting on himself a mortal wound or injury, or by omitting to do what is necessary to escape death, as by refusing to leave a burning house. From a moral standpoint we must treat therefore not only the prohibition of positive suicide, but also the obligation incumbent on man to preserve his life. Suicide is direct when a man has the intention of causing his own death, whether as an end to be attained, or as a means to another end, as when a man kills himself to escape condemnation, disgrace, ruin etc. It is indirect, and not usually called by this name when a man does not desire it, either as an end or as a means, but when he nevertheless commits an act which in effect involves death, as when he devotes himself to the care of the plague-stricken knowing that he will succumb under the task. • @calico26 - thank you very much for your comments. Have you considered trying Cymbalta? It addresses physical symptoms and is a relatively new medicine. We wish you well...regards...

  • @rosaryfilms I have not thought about cymbalta. My medication got changed so it is at a higher dose than it was. It is just hard dealing with a broken heart.

  • @calico26 - Cymbalta will help address the physical symptoms and allow time for the non-physical part of depression to heal. Regards and hang in there...

  • @calico26 - also check out the books at the Tan Books web site....regards

  • This is a very forward-thinking film for 1965. Thank you for posting this; I had never seen it. I have battled suicidal thoughts and depression for years, and this struck a chord with me. Thank you for posting this.

One of the best descriptions I've ever read of depression is "the worst you've ever felt, and feeling that way all the time." It's really true. I had hoped that, by this point in my life (I'm nearing 50), I'd be past all this, but I'm anything but.

  • @MrNomomojo - thank you for your comments and for sharing your experiences. Have you considered trying Cymbalta? It addresses physical symptoms and is a relatively new medicine. We wish you well...regards...

There's a lot wrong with that. Often, family and religion are the main causes of suicidal depression, at least that's how it was for me. Families can be relentlessly abusive, and religion doesn't cure suicide. It encourages it. Especially if you're not a straight, white, middle class, republican male. And suicidal people don't have many friends. The only way to truly cure suicide is to make excuses for yourself to keep staying alive. Set goals and hope things will get better.

  • Amazing film.

I had clinical depression when I was younger and I truly see myself in that man as he contemplates suicide over and over again, except as a child instead of an adult. They really captured the emotion. It's like looking into a mirror.

I'm glad that point of my life is over, but I still struggle with suicidal thoughts from time to time. Thankfully, it's not nearly as intense now as it was then. It's a wonder I'm still alive, personally. I'm impressed such a film was made in the 60s
