Union Pacific UP 844 - Feather River Canyon

Union Pacific 4-8-4 844 leads the Oroville to Portola segment of the Western Heritage tour on the former Western Pacific route through the Feather River canyon. Despite the lousy weather, an absurd number of chasers clogged CA Route 70, resulting in stop and go traffic all the way from Belden to Keddie (a distance of 20 miles!).

This is an abbreviated version of my video as I had a few more clips past Quincy that I couldn't fit within the 10-minute limit.

I got to make this trip when I was a teenager (early 70's) in a private car. My high school love's Dad, Sam Girdler, owned Solano Railcar in Oroville, California. Someone owned the railcar, or maybe they were fixing it at Solano Railcar, & we got to tack it on to the train & make the trip to Portola. I remember listening to the sound of the train all night, next to my boyfriend.. I can't believe my parents let me go on an over-nighter.. It was pretty romantic.

I chased 844 across Nevada and California. I shot it on days it ran from Elko, Nevada to Sparks, Nevada. I also chased it across Donner Pass and the Feather River Canyon.

When I chased 844 through the Feather River Canyon it got it at the following locations:

Poe

Tobin

Keddie

Graeagle

Portola

I would have gotten it at more spots however, it was a 2 lane road through the canyon and someone decided they wanted to pace along side the train in their car and hold up the rest of the crowd.
