It's a shame it cut of when you were starting to talk about paper cartridges, which speed up loading tremendously, since you don't have to measure the powder for each shot. You just tear it, pour it, ram it home and fire. Literally as fast as you can say it.
Flintlocks are a bit faster than percussion, because you don't have to place a cap on the weapon, the flint is built into the weapon.
This video makes me want to shoot. :)

By the time you had re-loaded you could have thirty or more arrrows sticking in you all fired from the same bow. A crossbow firing metal bolts would be much faster, and you wouldn't have to worry about getting your powder wet in the rain. Of course, the range of a rifle would be far superior to the other two weapons making an already loaded gun better for hunting or sniping (provided it wasn't raining).
Hmmmmmmm.probly not a good idea to slam the ramrod down numerous times onto the bullet, distortion.Your looking for a facefull of burning powder if you don't blow down the barrel before you reload .Black powder burns slow,so theres a good possibility of dumping fresh powder down on a still glowing grain of powder !!!!!!
Woudn't want to spend much time on the shooting range or out on the trail with you pal !!!!!!!!!

@pinewood8091 Rather than put my face and mouth over the barrel of a rifle, instead of blowing down the barrel I swab it between shots. Otherwise, burning powder aside, a second bullet won't go down the barrel due to fouling.
And, I'd rather have a distorted bullet than an unseated one.
The greater danger is that with cartridges you have to prime the pan before loading the main charge.

I'm in complete agreement with you, Hendrikdevuile.
I've read accounts that the Apache could have 6-8 arrows in the air at one time. There are also accounts that arrow wounds in the west were more lethal than gunshot wounds due to infection. The main advantage of the rifle was range, knock-down power, and the psychological effect with the smoke and sound.
The military, however, were trained to be able to fire three aimed shots in a minute.
Thanks for the comment.
