omewhere in Northern Russia in a small Russian Orthodox monastery lives a very unusual man. His fellow-monks are confused by his bizarre conduct. Those who visit the island believe that the man has the power to heal, exorcise demons and foretell the future. However, he considers himself unworthy because of a sin he committed in his youth. The film is a parable, combining the realities of Russian everyday life with monastic ritual and routine.

  • I just watched this film for the second time, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I have one question though, perhaps someone can answer it. I admire Anatoly's awareness of his own sins, his humility in their light, and his desire for holiness. I also recognize that the weight of murder he bears is beyond my own experience. However, even at the end of his life, when this weight has been lifted, why does he approach his Father in fear? Where are the joy and peace that accompany salvation? Thanks.

  • @futloose

It is through the realization of our sinfulness, fallen state and the constant fear of God that we are saved.

  • Thank you for posting this...my DVD won't play and I was SO in the mood to watch it!

  • :)

    Glory be to God!

  • This deserves to be posted since it is one of the greatest movies of all time IMHO...I own two copies...thanks for posting...Blagosloven jesi Gospodi!!!

  • @Ihtiandr13 fear of God is not the same as we say, "i'm afraid of something that might hurt me, a criminal, a wild animal, a disease, etc". it's when you have a deep respect and recognize your sinful nature (that only He can change), but also as if you are afraid to hurt someone you love. when you love God you are afraid to do something that might upset Him.

  • @BorislavX

If God is love why fear ? ;-)

  • @Lakkauser It is widely misunderstood that guilt is a sort of virtue or synonym of repentance. Which is not and is a sin itself!

Its remote island he just 'hid himself there from the law' as hi sad. At least that was his reasons in the beginning...

Gotta watch more them ones to grasp all details.

  • @Lakkauser The woman didn't recognized him as the holy man(same as the pregnant girl and others).

He talks to ppl on the level they can understand! Tell them I am the One and they can go into coma LOL...or 'crucify' him.

    Good film.

  • @Lakkauser Whoever is forgiven much, loves much. He recognizes that through the forgiveness of his guilt he owes a debt to the redeemer so he becomes a monk and serves Christ with signs following, in this case healing. Guilt led him to Christ, forgiveness led him to extreme service. It's not that he did or did not kill the man, the potential was there and it was an act of kindness & grace that God allowed him to see that he hadn't actually killed helping him to depart in peace.

  • Right now,my religion teacher shows at my class this movie.I know I should pay attention to this movie's meanings, but I find it very funny.

  • kao lek na nase napacene duse!ovo je film koji zasluzuje samo najlepse kritike.lungin kroz mamonova pokazuje kako izgledaju nasi sveti oci tj kako je izgledao sam isus hrist.

  • @futloose My reading is that that's what separates the real saints from just the good. The good have a drop or two of salvation and gnosis and are delighted with it, but the great drink oceans of it and thirst for more.
