Protecting the Public from Harmful Chemicals

Most people have no idea what Bisphenol-A is. Its a chemical compound, commonly referred to as BPA, that is found is many types of plastic packaging and on the inside of almost all food and beverage cans. But its also a chemical that has been linked to breast cancer, testicular cancer, low sperm count, miscarriage and other reproductive problems. Although it has already been banned in Minnesota, Connecticut and Chicago, BPA can still be found in hundreds of products.

Were cant all expected to be scientists. But unfortunately it seems that responsibility of protecting ourselves and our kids from harmful chemicals is falling on our shoulders, and not the federal agencies charged with oversight.

And BPA is just the tip of the iceberg--there are many more chemicals like it that pose a danger to our health.

The Environmental Protection Agency has been tasked to protect human health and the environment. But the EPA lacks the tools to carry out its duties. We must overhaul the chemical regulatory process something that hasnt been done in over 30 years. We need reform that protects both public health and the environment, and places the responsibility on chemical manufacturers to demonstrate the safety of their products. This is a commonsense solution to a long overdue problem.
