i wouldnt knock the cheap scanner! i have one of those and its read vehicles where my snap on one didnt!!

The reason you erase it is to find if the code is temporary (soft code) or permanent (hard code). If the code is a permanent code, it will come back as soon as you start the engine and that is the one you have to fix.
