Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone on January 30, 1877, and this song was written 12 years later in 1899, by Ida Emerson and Joseph E. Howard. The telephone was a quickly accepted technology and at the time this song was written there were 1200 telephone girls at the switches in New York City alone.
This song may be the first song about on-line dating! The singer has never met the girl, but has talked to her and as their relationship grows, she finally allows him to call her by her first name. Protocol would have called for addressing her as "Miss _____,", until they became more "intimate" with each other.
Hundreds of people have covered this song.
Probably the first recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOo-zKk0x4Q
