This is a song that was written by Kris Kristoffersen although most notably performed by Janis Joplin on the Pearl album. It's a song I love to play and sing and the video that you see here was the second take. The version I am singing is based on a Kris Kristofferson recording although the key change in the middle was something that I took from a Jerry Lee Lewis recording.
It was a completely live recording, no reverb, no effects...bathrooms have great acoustics!...and yes I am sat on the toilet!

Busted flat in baton rouge, headin for the trains,
Feelin nearly faded as my jeans.
Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained,
Took us all the way to new orleans.
Took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana
And was blowin sad while bobby sang the blues,
With them windshield wipers slappin time and
Bobby clappin hands we finally sang up every song
That driver knew.

Freedom is just another word for nothin left to lose,
And nothin aint worth nothin but its free,
Feelin good was easy, lord, when bobby sang the blues,
And buddy, that was good enough for me,
Good enough for me and my bobby mcgee.

From the coalmines of kentucky to the california sun,
Bobby shared the secrets of my soul,
Standin right beside me through everythin I done,
And every night she kept me from the cold.
The somewhere near salinas, lord, I let her slip away,
She was lookin for the love I hope shell find,
Well Id trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday,
Holdin bobbys body close to mine.

Freedom is just another word for nothin left to lose,
And nothin left was all she left to me,
Feelin good was easy, lord, when bobby sang the blues,
And buddy, that was good enough for me.
Good enough for me and bobby mcgee.

  • Thanks very much.

    Jonathan

  • Loved the performance. Just curious, I have seen the chord progression you played here and another version that uses G-D7 on the first verse, then G-C-D7 on chorus. Is this just your choice or is the KK version different than another?

  • @jamesblan Hey, sorry, I missed this comment until now. It was just my choice. there are a lot of versions out there.

    Glad you enjoyed it, Jonathan
