Patrolling on a Segway

Duke Police are able to patrol campus in a unique way by hoping on Segways - two-wheeled vehicles. In addition to being emission-free, officers say it helps them meet and greet members of the Duke community.

I keep seeing PD's implementing these things and I just don't get it. For a standard patrol a bicycle seems much more logical. Bikes are cheap to buy and maintain additionally they are more reliable and faster. On top of this its probably more comfortable as an officer can coast whilst sitting on a saddle instead of standing all day.
