Ronnie was not only the best vocalist in hard rock and metal,he also was a college educated extremely intelligent human being..He was an absolute monster lyricist and worked every day
on being an all around artist and producer..I had the joy of being his confidant for 30 years and I was blessed..He was kind and always positive but a perfectionist when it came to his music..I miss him dearly and I am just now able to listen to him again..R.I.P. My brother..

If you listen to the vocal of Dio's "We Rock" and intro of "Don't Talk To Strangers", it's difficult to believe that they are all by same vocalist. That's the dynamic of Dio's vocal unequal to most of metal vocalists. I was at the Halford concert(not Judas Priest but Rob's solo band) where he opened for Iron Maiden. I arrived there little late and Halford was already playing. I can hear his voice all the way out in the parking lots and recognized his voice. AMAZING.

Yeah, in the end the top metal vocalists are hard to compare. They sing with different styles and often very different types of songs.
For me, Dio was always the more melodic vocalist, while other top metal singers sometimes had more power and/or range.
But anyway, no comparison is necessary, they are all great. I just wanted to say how amazed I was with Halford since I saw you were a big fan :)

I've favored Rob over Dio most of my life as a fan and it was only recently that my view changed more toward Dio without EVER denying the greatness of Rob Halford. If you think Halford is great in live today, he was WAY BETTER back in the 70's and 80's as was with Dio. Unfortunately, I think neither are as good as they were during their prime but nonetheless, they are still the legends. Halford's vocal is quintessential Heavy Metal vocal while Dio have greater dynamics.

You know, I had never seen Priest live until recently (since they were never quite at the top of my list)... but I have to say, after catching their goodbye tour... holy crap. I have never, ever seen a vocalist do live what Halford did. He was so powerful, and never hit a note wrong the whole night.
My favs will always be Bruce and Dio, but I have never seen either perform live anywhere close to what I saw Halford do. No disrespect intended.

@unorthodoxtrotsky Yes, at Donnington he was incredible as always. I'm not an expert in singing but all I know is that he sounds good to my ears

:)))) I thought that was your stand but I just wanted to make sure. :) One of the major reason why I put Dio above Halford is due to his vocal skills but also from my numerous experiences of listening to him live. The way he carry on his vocal from song after song and his ability diversify his feelings are just amazing. Have you ever heard "At Donington UK Live 1983 & 1987"? JUST AMAZING!!!!!

Ronnie James Dio was very often (and rightfully so) recognized as one of the greatest metal vocalist in the world. I used to favored Rob Halford more but recently my view have changed and I will have to say that I think Ronnie James Dio was the best metal vocalist in the world. But what have been often ignored was due rightful recognition of his amazing talent as a vocalist was that Ronnie James Dio was one of the outstanding and poetic lyricist in the metal world. We miss you Dio. RIP.
