@dmbaechle and that's not counting the hour i stood around waiting for the start. we literally didn't get rolling until 9 AM. And when we got to the Astoria water stop, it was OUT OF WATER! A friend of mine lined up a couple blocks back from me, and he didn't get to the start line until 9:30. Spent most of central park walking, and by the time he got to the first rest stop, it was 11:30, and they told him it was closed (despite still having bananas and water).

What are the conditions if you would like to get in front? If you're a racer is there any way that you can start first to avoid gridlock?

It was probably a condition of entry to wear a helmet... stupid really. Let people make their own choice... helmetfreedom(dot)org

I notice almost everyone (if not all) wears a helmet, was it manditory the bike tour? In The Netherlands (where I live) it's mostly not required (when it's recreational), except for very large tours such as the Eleven-Cities-Cycling-Tour (240 km) which has a maximum of 15.000 riders. I've never done more walking on a bike ride than at the 2010 5boro tour. I experienced bike gridlock for the first time, and hope to never experience it again.
I think i walked through half of the central park portion. Granted, i lined up later than i'd hoped to (7:30), and was near the WTC site. I was hoping to average 12-14 mph...instead, it took me 3 hours to get to mile 23 in brooklyn because of all the gridlock and walking.

It was my first time this year, and i have to say that it was great. Yes, you have to wait to get started, and stop in the Central Park, but it was not a problem at all. I will definitely do it next year.
Don't listen to complainers, they will complain anyway.
